HUNTING
Keen to come hunting with us? Heres everything you need to know!
We offer guided horse hire at a number of local hunts throughout the season (March through June), with a range of experienced horses and ponies that can cater to intermediate – advanced riders. Riders join us as we provide a hunting experience tailored to the individual group of riders, riding across expansive and beautiful Central Otago Hunt venues.

What is hunting?
Hunting is an incredible sport where riders follow the hounds across country as they track their quarry – In New Zealand, that is the introduced pest species of the Hare. Riders follow the hounds wherever the scent has taken them, riding at pace over open fields, jumping any fences and waterways in their path. More sedate riders choose to ride at a slower pace, opting to use gateways and farm tracks, or finding a hill to park up on and watch the goings on.
A time honoured tradition, hunting attracts people for all sorts of reasons – access to ride over awe inspiring landscapes, the social aspect, the adrenaline fueled runs, or the joy of making it over a fence to name a few. We learn the names and habits of our favourite hounds, gain confidence riding over new ground and in our own ability to handle its challenges, and build friendships with our peers.
We love nothing more than to share the joy of hunting with new members, and hope to see you out at some hunts this season!

How much does it cost?
For riders who are on a membership with us, $250 per day to AME for tack, horse, and guide. Casual riders $350. Plus reimbursement for fuel cost which is split between everyone going, usually around $80 each
PLUS – You will need to be either a member of the Central Otago Hunt, or pay visiting guest fees (approx $60) to the hunt.
How do I register?
Hunt sign ups can be found here on our website under the book now tab. We may also hunt on additional dates, so if you cannot make it to any of the optional dates please do get in touch as we may still be able to accomodate you on a different date, especially if you are an experienced rider.
Is Hunting safe?
Just like any time you get on a horse, there is a risk you will fall off. With hunting there are inevitably some thrills and spills as riders get their balance riding outside of the arena. We endeavour to keep our hunting riders as safe as possible, encouraging them to take on new challenges that they are ready for, while using our extensive hunting experience to minimise risks as much as possible.
All riders need to sign our hunting specific disclaimer which goes to Central Otago Hunt to acknowledge that they accept the risks involved in riding and jumping horses.

What if I don’t want to jump?
No worries! Just make sure you register for a hunt that states the particular property is easy for gating. That way you can easily get around without having to ride a long way to find a gate in order to get across a fence line.
Do I need to bring something for the Hunt Breakfast?
Yes! It is good hunting ettiquette to bring along a plate to share for the “Breakfast” following the hunt. Sausage rolls, scones, home baking, pizza etc all make sure good finger foods to share.
Do I need to accompany my child?
We require at least one parent to come along, and can usually find a following vehicle for you to join so that you can follow along around the property.
